playing poker and teaching science

My Photo
Name:
Location: Honolulu, HI, United States

I'm a middle school science teacher, wrestling coach, poker player, scuba diver, aikido black belt, amateur writer, and student of life. In the past I have tried to give back a little by volunteering at a children's home in Belmopan, Belize, Central America. I also love Frosted Flakes. I took a year-long sabbatical from my science teaching position in order to sail the Caribbean, retired from teaching in Indiana and now teach at a Honolulu middle school.

My joke!

I'm so happy today because I have Michael Vike in my fantasy dog fighting league!

If you hear this joke anywhere else, they stole it from me!

As summer draws to a close...

It was definitely a summer to remember and it'll take a while to dole out the details because it seems each day brings a new memory, and with each memory a smile.
Children are the life's blood of the Central American country of Belize. Of the nearly 300,000 people who make up the population, nearly 50% are below the age of 18. It's a very young country and that makes caring for the children paramount to the country's future.
Mrs. Leonie Herrera-Gillham's calling is to care for children. She is the founder and director of The King's Children Home in Belmopan, Belize. Each and every day she wakes up and tends to the needs of approximately 50 children from newborn to 18 years of age. Some children are orphaned, some are abandoned, some have been placed with her by the Belizian child protective services.
Each child however calls her "Mommy" and receives the love and care only a Mother can give.
I had the privilege to work my butt off for the month of July at the King's Home and it was a experience that words can only fall short of explaining, but yet I'll share a memory now and then and bring you along for the ride.
Stay tuned.
