playing poker and teaching science: Has it been THAT long??
My Photo
Name:
Location: Honolulu, HI, United States

I'm a middle school science teacher, wrestling coach, poker player, scuba diver, aikido black belt, amateur writer, and student of life. In the past I have tried to give back a little by volunteering at a children's home in Belmopan, Belize, Central America. I also love Frosted Flakes. I took a year-long sabbatical from my science teaching position in order to sail the Caribbean, retired from teaching in Indiana and now teach at a Honolulu middle school.

Has it been THAT long??

Yes, I think it actually HAS been that long! My last entry was in May.....wow.

It's like the tag-line on the commercial: "Life comes at you fast!" That's the way it's been for the last few months. A whirlwind of non-stop action. Here's the Reader's Digest version:

1. Awarded $8000 grant
2. Son's car blew up
3. Bought son new (used) car
4. Son graduated high school
5. Graduation stuff (open house etc.)
6. Flew to Hawaii for two weeks (with son)
7. Became empty nester
8. Son started college
9. Son imediately evicted from college dorm
10. Many long-winded lectures
11. School started back up
12. Ended week-long experience as empty-nester
13. Son seeks full-time employment
14. More lectures
15. Played a little poker

That about sums it up. The summer was an emotional rollercoaster, but that pretty much sums up life as a parent. Kids mess up. We help them through it. They either learn their lesson or their life becomes a series of bad decisions and broken dreams.

A swift kick in the ass helps sometimes.

Honestly, how much can I yell too much at a kid that has yet to do anything worse than I did myself? The problem: he got caught!

As far as poker goes, I've been playing a lot more no limit ring games. I proved, to myself at least, that I can consistantly make money playing limit poker, but it IS really boring playing only the best hands and letting the fish pay you off. No limit has a lot more thought to it and post flop play is a lot of fun.

I'm playing poker as a hobby, so it should be fun. I am howver contemplating a trip to Las Vegas for a few days in the fall or winter so I may go back to the limit tables to fund the trip.

Thanks for reading!

Good to see ya! Sounds like you had a crazy summer. If you find yourself heading to Vegas, let me know! I've been thinking of taking a little trip myself...
