playing poker and teaching science: What's wrong with our schools?

Name:
Location: Honolulu, HI, United States

I'm a middle school science teacher, wrestling coach, poker player, scuba diver, aikido black belt, amateur writer, and student of life. In the past I have tried to give back a little by volunteering at a children's home in Belmopan, Belize, Central America. I also love Frosted Flakes. I took a year-long sabbatical from my science teaching position in order to sail the Caribbean, retired from teaching in Indiana and now teach at a Honolulu middle school.

What's wrong with our schools?

I really wish I could have taken a better picture, but I think the one I have will serve as sufficient evidence that I am in fact reporting accurately what I actually saw.

My wife and I were at the Lynard Skynard concert last week at one of the country's premier outdoor music venues, Verizon Wireless Music Center.

(Actually, Kid Rock was the headliner, but that's another issue entirely.)

The unwashed masses that make this country great and ensure that we will never have an invading hoard come ashore in South Carolina were in abundance this night. Every people watcher in attendance had a field day as there was way to much to take in and process.

Side note: Does a man missing three front teeth stand at home in front of a full-length mirror, take off his shirt, admire the farmer's tan showcasing his pale, sunken chest, pull on his fake leather pants tell his wife, "Time to go. I look good!"???

That was the guy standing in front of me, holding up his nearly unconscious wife as she regurgitated on her own pants, saying, "Don't worry. She's okay."

And this was in line going INTO the concert!

Now, back to the picture.
Two rows in front of me is a chunky little ten or eleven year old boy wearing a Kid Rock concert tee shirt that says, “You’ve never met a motherf…er like me!”

Question: Who lets an impressionable young man wear a shirt like that?

Answer: The man sitting next to him wearing his “#1 Dad” tee shirt.

That’s what’s wrong with our schools.
